Two Camping Programs by RaftWithKids.com

Camp and Raft – For Experienced Campers.

Take Your Kids Camping – For  inexperienced or beginner campers.

More details on these two camping program in a minute, but first...

About our Campground…

Our campground is located at our Nantahala Outpost. It is close and convenient if you are rafting with us. It's 25 minutes from our Tuck Outpost. It is convenient, comfortable, and clean.

Located in the Nantahala Gorge, it strikes a good balance between secluded and convenient.

Our campground is not for long term camping. Campers generally stay one to three nights. It is not a full service campground. There is not electricity at campsites. We do have hot showers and bathrooms.

Camp and Raft

This is for experienced campers. You can bring your own tent ($6/person/night) or use one of ours ($10/person/night.) You are responsible for all aspects of your camping. You can use our bathrooms and hot showers. Camp and raft is a convenient and inexpensive option for you if you are experienced campers. This camping option is generally only available to those who are rafting with us.

Take Your Kids Camping

Share the unique adventure of camping with your kids. But avoid the hassles, frustrations, fears, and equipment cost of beginner campers going it alone.

Take Your Kids Camping is specifically designed for those who aren't really comfortable or experienced camping, but want to let their kids experience the unique adventure of camping. Our camping guides are always nearby and available for routine and non-routine needs. They assist you with most aspects of camping, including getting the campfire going. You’ll use one of our tents that are already set-up. You and your kids enjoy the fun and unique adventure of camping with out all the hassles of setting up and without the fears and frustrations common to beginning campers going it alone.

Our Camp Guides are always nearby to assist you. One Camp Guide normally assist one to four tents.

Choose from Three Levels of Food Service

  1. Provide Your Own Meals - We provide everything listed below, except your meals. You are responsible for those. We'll help you get started cooking etc., if you want. Available most nights in the summer and on limited days in the spring and fall.
  2. Meals Provided - Include everything in the Guide-Assisted Camping and your evening meal and breakfast. The meals are traditional food and are provided by a professional caterer and served at the campsite. This is good outdoor food. It is not a gourmet meal, but it is good and the setting is great. Lunch/mid-day meals are your responsibility. Available most nights in the summer and on limited days in the spring and fall.

This option takes away most of your food hassles. You may want to bring snacks. And, you are responsible for your lunch.
  3. Catered Camping with Big Steve - This is the Ultimate Camping Experience. Big Steve will prepare breakfast and evening meals for you. The food and fun is a treat. This option is available on a very limited basis. Call for dates and details.

Camping is a great experience that your kids and you will remember for months and years to come. But camping can also be a lot of work and trouble for the beginner. By the time you set the tent up, get a fire going, and prepare even a simple meal...it's nearly bedtime. Then you wake up and fight the fire for breakfast and before you know it it's time to pack up and go...another tedious job. Experienced campers do this quickly and make it part of the fun, but it can be very frustrating for the beginner. Blue Ridge Outing Company's "Take Your Kids Camping" takes care of the details and work, while you get to enjoy a wonderful new outdoor experience with your kids.

During the day, you can take your kids whitewater rafting with Blue Ridge Outing Company or choose from many other activities in the surrounding Smoky Mountains. These include horseback riding, gem mining, hiking, riding an old time steam train, and experiencing the Cherokee Indian Reservation. Blue Ridge Outing Company can send you a list of family friendly activities.

Our Camping Program is headed by “Big Steve” Mitchell

Big Steve (Steve is 6' 8" and seems even taller) has been a camper for over 30 years. He went through the ranks of Cub Scouts, Weblos, and Boy Scouts as a child and teen. He is an avid canoer, and has done work with the B.S.A. (Boy Scouts of America), Royal Rangers, and was a guide in the Florida panhandle, taking families and groups into the wildlife rich swamplands and offshore islands.

He has a deep love for nature and wildlife. He has traveled extensively in the USA and camped in a wide variety of climates and terrain. He has studied the ways and philosophies of Native American cultures to better understand our magnificent country.

He is the father of two girls, who often join him in his outdoor adventures. Big Steve is outgoing and entertaining. He enjoys sharing his love of the outdoors and camping with kids and families. "Take Your Kids Camping" is unforgettable family fun!
